The Jack Ruina Nuclear Age Talk 2019 | Ernest Moniz

Ernest Moniz served as the 13th United States secretary of Energy in the Obama Administration from May 2013 to January 2017. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Moniz was the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics and Engineering Systems, director of the Energy Initiative, and director of the Laboratory for Energy and Environment at MIT. He also served as Under Secretary of the Department of Energy from 1997 to January 2001. He served as Associate Director for Science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President from 1995 to 1997. 

 

 

The Jack Ruina Nuclear Age Dinner, an annual event hosted by the MIT Security Studies Program, took place on October 25th, 2019 in the Samberg Conference Center. The dinner series was endowed by Professor Jack Ruina, MIT Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering and former Director of the MIT Security Studies program. The dinner features a prominent speaker to present on one of Professor Ruina's major professional interests: nuclear weapons strategy and policy. 

The guest for the 2019 Ruina Dinner was Ernest Moniz, the U.S. Secretary of Energy from 2013 to 2017 and emeritus faculty member in the MIT Department of Physics. In his remarks, Dr. Moniz reflected on a range of issues related to nonproliferation and arms control, and offered his insights on contemporary challenges and opportunities in nuclear policy.
