Center for Nuclear Security Policy - Nuclear Security Junior Fellows

Nuclear Security Junior Fellows

The Center will hire Junior Fellows to serve as research assistants for faculty, researchers, and fellows on topics related to nuclear security, providing the fellows with a “pre-PhD” training experience to prepare them for pursuing a doctoral degree in nuclear security.

The Nuclear Security Junior Fellow/RSA position provides research assistance and support projects for associated faculty, researchers, and fellows under the direction of the CNSP director.  They perform research, collect, organize, and analyze data, coordinate multiple research-related projects, summarize and document findings, proof-read research papers and articles, assist with fact-checking, editing, formatting, and other support for faculty, researchers and fellows working on nuclear security topics.  They work on issues of nuclear deterrence, nuclear proliferation and nonproliferation, decision making, nuclear history, and other areas of nuclear security. This is an ideal position for a recent undergrad interested in gaining research experience in political science with an interest in nuclear security before pursuing graduate education.

Please note: Interested applicants should apply through https://hr.mit.edu/jobs and follow the instructions for submitting all additional documents to SSP-RSA@mit.edu.  Full job description is available here.

A cover letter, resume/CV, one letter of recommendation, and a writing sample is required.  In addition to applying through the MIT system, you must also submit all materials to SSP-RSA@mit.edu.  Your application will not be considered unless all documents are received.  Your cover letter should address and outline your interest in nuclear security.  Your letter of recommendation must be submitted by the recommender; please have them send it to SSP-RSA@mit.edu.  Recommendation letters submitted by the applicant will not be accepted.  The writing sample should be no longer than five pages total (it can be an excerpt from something longer). As for what to choose for a writing sample, applicants should pick their strongest work, no matter the topic. Ideally, the sample should consist of writing that was NOT edited or published by an outlet.  Incomplete applications will not be considered.  International candidates are welcome to apply but the position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

The committee will start reviewing applications by February 15, 2025.
