SSP Wednesday Seminar April 29th with Jacqueline Hazelton
Jacqueline Hazelton

On April 29, 2020, Jacqueline L. Hazelton (Assistant Professor of Strategy and Policy at the U.S. Naval War College) discussed “Headhunters, Pirates, and Englishmen, Oh My!: Outsider Rule and Compellence in Sarawak” at a virtual SSP Wednesday seminar.

This week, faculty, students and staff gathered virtually at noon to listen to Jacqueline L. Hazelton (Assistant Professor of Strategy and Policy at the U.S. Naval War College) discuss “Headhunters, Pirates, and Englishmen, Oh My!: Outsider Rule and Compellence in Sarawak.” Hazelton spoke about how one Englishman’s family succeeded in creating political order over indigenous groups in Borneo without using the traditional empire-building efforts of nation states at the time. Hazelton also explained how such research was relevant to the use of military intervention, peacekeeping and counterinsurgency seen by and within many countries today. A fantastic Q&A with the audience followed.

Our final Wednesday Seminar of the year (to be held on 5/6 by webinar), features Bridget Coggins, Visiting Scholar at the Center for Strategic Studies at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy 2019-2020 and Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Coggins will present: “Domestic Anarchy in a World of States.”
